Textiles of memory and light: Carlota Beltrame and art as resistance

The Klemm Foundation of Buenos Aires presented the anthological exhibition “The Slight Power of the Concept” by Tucumán-born artist Carlota Beltrame. Curated by Eugenia Garay Basualdo, the winner of the Klemm Award 2022 will show a total of forty-two pieces produced between 2003 and 2025. Through a group of works that combine textiles, installations, and light, the artist offers a profound reflection on the intersection between the materiality of art, politics, and memory.

One of the axes of the show is the exploration of memory through traditional materials and techniques. In her lace series, for example, the artist recovers historical images and transforms them into delicate fabrics, redefining the textile as a support for resistance and testimony. This operation not only links art with craftsmanship but also establishes a tension between the fragility of the material and the solidity of memory.

One of the central pieces of the exhibition is “Utopia”, winner of the first prize at the National Visual Arts Salon. This work stands out for its ability to question the unfulfilled promises of enlightenment and reflect on the failure of reason as an engine of progress. The installation, composed of meticulously arranged frames, invites viewers to reconsider historical narratives and their relevance in the contemporary context.

Another outstanding work is “Revés de trama,” a series of six pieces that reinterpret historical photographs of the Montoneros' takeover of the Casa Histórica de Tucumán. These images, translated into randa lace, a traditional technique of the region, establish a dialogue between craftsmanship and political history, highlighting the capacity of art to re-signify past events and keep collective memory alive.

The light installation “Diadema” is another example of Beltrame's ability to combine tradition and modernity. Composed of 450 lights that form a map of Tucumán, the work evokes the image of a city seen from a distance, illuminated at night. The lighting is not just an aesthetic device but a metaphor for what is revealed and what remains hidden in historical narratives.

Eugenia Garay Basualdo's curatorship highlights the relevance of critical thinking in Beltrame's work, situating it in the tradition of political conceptual art of the 1960s and its resonances in the 1990s. The exhibition invites us to reflect on the role of art in constructing discourses and its capacity to question established power structures.

In “The Slight Power of the Concept”, Carlota Beltrame confronts us with the fragility of utopias and the persistence of memory. Her works, loaded with symbolism and poetry, invite us to question our relationship with the past and to reflect on the narratives that build our collective identity. The exhibition is a powerful demonstration of the power of art to generate spaces for reflection and dialogue, reaffirming the importance of memory in the construction of a more conscious and committed future.
